Panama and Colombia Seek to Strengthen Border Security

This Tuesday marked the start of the XXIX Border Binational Commission (COMBIFRON) meeting, a key event aimed at strengthening operational coordination and cooperation on security along the common border. The meeting, taking place from April 14-15 in the Panamanian capital, is organized by the National Border Service (SENAFRONT) in conjunction with Colombian military and police forces. The Director General of SENAFRONT, Larry SolĂs, led the Panamanian delegation and highlighted during the opening the importance of cooperation between both countries as a fundamental pillar for addressing security challenges in the border region. The meeting brings together representatives from various security entities, including the National Police, the National Aeronaval Service, and the National Migration Service, with the specific objective of strengthening strategic coordination and information exchange to carry out joint actions. The border area between Panama and Colombia faces various transnational threats, such as drug trafficking, irregular migration, human trafficking, smuggling, illegal mining, and the presence of irregular armed groups. In this context, both countries agree on the need to maintain articulated and sustained work. In this context, COMBIFRON is consolidated as a key mechanism to follow up on previous agreements and coordinate new actions to counter these crimes, as well as to reinforce security and sovereignty in the region. The Panamanian public force reiterates its commitment to continue working in coordination with Colombia to ensure a safer and more controlled border.
