Panama's Shrimp Exports Surpass $90 Million

Panama's shrimp exports have already surpassed $90 million, and this year a growth of over 40% is projected, according to the president of the Panamanian Aquaculture Association (ASPAC), Roberto Chamorro. This figure consolidates shrimp as the country's main aquaculture export product. During the third session of the Board of Directors of the Panama Aquatic Resources Authority (ARAP), key issues for the sector were addressed. ASPAC insisted on the need for the aquaculture regulation to be signed and promulgated soon, highlighting the sector's economic relevance. The administrator general of ARAP, Eduardo Carrasquilla, reported on the approval of a contract to cover the institution's overdue rent of $1.4 million, as well as other labor matters and the status of national fisheries regulation. Aquaculture concessions with addenda under evaluation were also reviewed. Another important topic was the creation of a tuna hub in Puerto Armuelles, with the aim of attracting international investment and consolidating Panama's position in the export of tuna and other seafood products. Additionally, the ARAP Strategic Plan 2025-2029 was presented, which seeks to diversify production, strengthen competitiveness, and promote sustainability in the aquaculture sector. Attendees included authorities from MIDA, AMP, MICI, SENACYT, as well as representatives from the exporting sector and aquatic research centers.
