The Panama Canal is intensifying security measures in the Chagres river basin due to heavy rains.
Luis Ortega, a representative of the Palmas Bellas Consortium, reported that the construction of the new water treatment plant in the Palmas Bellas area, Chagres district, Colón province, is 65% complete. He stated that adverse weather conditions have caused delays in the work, but construction is ongoing to ensure a steady supply of drinking water to local communities.
It is estimated that upon completion, the project will benefit 8,000 people living in the communities of Palmas Bellas, Nuevo Chagres, Piña, and Unión de Piña, with a total investment of $24 million. Raw water will be drawn from the Lagarto River for treatment; the plant is expected to process one million gallons per day and will have a 400,000-gallon reserve tank.
