Panama Canal Launches New Port Development Project

The Panama Canal begins meetings this Monday with interested parties regarding the development of two new ports, one on each side of the waterway connecting the Atlantic and Pacific, with an investment of 2.6 billion dollars. The ports in Corozal (Pacific) and Telfers (Atlantic) are expected to be operational by early 2029 and will increase the current transshipment capacity of 9.5 million TEU by 5 million TEU per year. The project, which was previously shelved, has been revived as part of the concession transfer for the Balboa and Cristobal ports from the Hong Kong operator CK Hutchison to a consortium of BlackRock and TiL. The Canal's administrator, Ricaurte Vásquez, stated that it is necessary to confirm the existence of the project and partners to carry it out. Seventeen global entities are in conversation in this initial stage, with the goal of ensuring the widest possible competition.
