Alcohol Production in Panama Plummets

Total alcoholic beverage production in Panama fell by 10%. Rum production dropped by almost 50%, while wine, Cognac, and whiskey production increased. Industrial beer also saw a decline.

The total production of alcoholic beverages in the country decreased by 10% until the month of October. A year ago, between January and October, 8.7 million liters of rum were produced, while in the same period of 2025, it was 4.3 million. In August and October 2024, more than one million liters of the liquor were produced, while the best month of 2025 has been June with 542,780 liters. The production of this liquor hit bottom in May, when only 85,122 liters were produced. In contrast, wine production increased by 37.3%, Cognac by 30%, and whiskey by 6%. The liquor that has plummeted is rum, with its production falling by almost 50% this year. According to information from the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC), collected up to October, industrial beer production has fallen by 8.5%. Additionally, apart from the alcoholic beverages we have mentioned, gin production has decreased by 26%. From 227 million liters produced in 2024, this year there were only 207 million. However, if October production is compared with the same month last year, it has increased by 16.7%, which is good news for the industry, considering that the last two months of the year have many celebrations for national holidays and the Christmas season. In June, it rose to 183,761 liters to then surpass the 300 thousand-liter mark from July onwards. The production of the three alcoholic beverages most consumed by Panamanians continues to fall so far this year. It is noted that this statistic does not account for the production of craft beers.
