Panama's Sugar Industry Denies Corruption Allegations

Panama's sugar industry representative, Aniel Flores, refuted corruption rumors linked to ethanol production. He stated the industry demands priority purchase of domestic sugar and that investments in new technology will create thousands of jobs.

Aniel Flores, representative of the sugar industry, came forward to deny rumors of alleged corruption. He emphasized that the industry's only requirement is the preferential purchase of the national product. "We want that effort to be bought before importing," he stated. Flores also dismissed accusations of a deal related to his stake in one of the country's sugar mills and the production of ethanol as a biofuel. He clarified that existing cane fields are for sugar production, not biofuel. According to him, the law on ethanol production has not yet been passed, and the market remains open to everyone. Once food security is ensured, investment is planned for nearly 20,000 new hectares to meet the demand for ethanol generation.
