Panama Extends Price Control for Basic Food Products

Panama has extended the price control for selected food products by six months. Following the enforcement of Executive Decree No. 1 of 2026, the competent authority will monitor that businesses respect the established caps for ground meat, oil, milk, and bread. In response to this provision, the Authority for Consumer Protection and Competition Defense (Acodeco) has announced that it will strictly enforce compliance with the measure throughout the national territory. The regulation sets maximum retail prices and gross commercial margins nationwide, with the exception of the insular territory. These actions aim to prevent excessive charges and ensure the population's access to fundamental food products under fair market conditions. The institution emphasizes that consumers should not pay amounts higher than those established in the decree. Acodeco is the entity responsible for conducting the necessary inspections to verify that the different economic agents comply with the prices and margins stipulated by the National Government. Likewise, complaints can be filed through the official AcodecoPma accounts on Facebook and X, or directly on the institutional web portal. In case of detecting irregularities in points of sale, citizens are urged to file their reports through the virtual assistant Sindi (Institutional Information and Complaint System).
