Inspectors from the Customs Prevention and Control Directorate in the province of Colón seized cigarettes, allegedly contraband, valued at approximately 28 thousand dollars.
The merchandise was being transported in a private vehicle. At the time of the inspection, the driver could not present documentation to support the payment of the corresponding taxes. Therefore, both the vehicle and the citizen were referred to the Customs headquarters for the corresponding procedures.
The actions of customs inspectors have intensified in recent days as part of the "Carnival without Contraband" operation. Inspections extend into the perimeters of maritime ports, the Free Zone, the highway, the city of Colón, and even coastal communities sensitive to smuggling activity, which harms the country's economy due to tax evasion.
