Panamanian Cattlemen Against Imported Milk in Schools

Panama's National Cattlemen's Association opposes the Ministry of Commerce's initiative to replace national milk with imported powder in the school program. Producers argue this will harm their industry and worsen children's nutrition.

Panamanian Cattlemen Against Imported Milk in Schools

The National Cattlemen's Association, chapter of Los Santos, has warned that it will not allow imported powdered milk into the school milk and cheese program. They claim that a technical subcommittee of the Ministry of Commerce is moving a proposal to change the regulations and open the door to products from abroad. According to them, this directly harms the national producer, who is already struggling with high costs. The unrest grew because MEDUCA opened the bidding proposals on January 20, but —according to the cattlemen— the legal process to modify the regulation had not yet been completed. For them, the issue is not only economic, but also one of quality and nutrition. The final call was directed at parents and teachers: to remain vigilant for the children's health and to defend a truly 'Healthy School Breakfast' with Panamanian products.
