Panama successfully concluded the 14th Annual Meeting of the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (SPRFMO), where the main results highlight agreements on jack mackerel fishery that continue to strengthen its management within the framework of this Commission. Likewise, at this international gathering that brought together 24 countries from February 24 to March 6, significant progress was made in the management of the squid fishery through the adoption of precautionary measures aimed at reducing fishing effort. The SPRFMO and its subsidiary bodies completed two weeks of intensive work that allowed for important steps to be taken to strengthen monitoring, control, and transparency in fishing activities, including the adoption of standards for electronic monitoring, a key tool to strengthen the management and supervision of fisheries in the region. As the host country and a member of the SPRFMO, Panama reaffirmed its commitment to dialogue and to the application of the decisions adopted in the forum, convinced that stable fisheries governance benefits the coastal states, fishing nations, the industry, and future generations. “Panama and the Panama Aquatic Resources Authority were honored to have hosted this important international meeting, thanking all participating delegations for their commitment, spirit of cooperation, and constructive work during the celebration of the 14th Annual Meeting of the SPRFMO,” concluded the high-ranking official of the ARAP.
