The Authority for Consumer Protection and Defense of Competition (Acodeco) has ordered a provisional suspension of any tariff increases for mobile phone plans in Panama. This decision comes amid an investigation into possible monopolistic practices in the market. The investigation involves Cable & Wireless Panamá, S.A. (Más Móvil) and Grupo de Comunicaciones Digitales, S.A. (Tigo). According to the authority, the measure is based on Article 105 of Law 45 of 2007 and Article 27 of Executive Decree 8-A of 2009, which allow for the blocking of actions that may affect free competition. Acodeco explained that the suspension applies to increases announced, applied, or in effect during 2026 for prepaid and postpaid plans. The order is in effect as of today and will remain in place until it is determined whether the case will be brought before the competent courts. The institution stated that the objective is to prevent consumers from having to pay more while it is clarified whether there were any irregularities in the market.
