The Authority for Consumer Protection and Competition Defense (ACODECO) has ordered the provisional suspension of the rate hikes for mobile phone plans implemented in 2026 by Cable & Wireless Panamá, S.A. (Más Móvil) and Grupo de Comunicaciones Digitales, S.A. (Tigo), while an administrative investigation is underway into the possible commission of absolute monopolistic practices.
The measure applies to both prepaid and postpaid mobile phone plans and takes effect as of this March 12, 2026, according to an official statement from the entity.
ACODECO explained that the decision is made within the framework of an administrative investigation opened against both companies, in accordance with Article 105 of Law 45 of October 31, 2007, and Article 27 of Executive Decree 8-A of January 22, 2009.
«The provisional suspension of the rate increase for mobile phone plans (prepaid and postpaid) that were announced, implemented, and in effect during the year 2026 has been ordered, as of today and while a subsequent demand is decided upon in competent courts,» the entity stated.
The authority indicated that the suspension will remain in effect while it is determined whether a lawsuit should be filed in competent courts regarding the conduct under investigation.
ACODECO also warned that if the companies continue to charge the increase from the effective date, users can file the corresponding complaint with the institution.
Complaints can be filed by calling 311, by email at info@acodeco.gob.pa, or through the procedures section available on the entity's official website.
If it is verified that the charging of the suspended rates continues, the authority indicated that the situation could lead to a contempt sanction for the responsible company.
