The ENA company has announced the expansion of the South Corridor in Panama to cope with increasing traffic. The project will add two lanes in each direction on the stretch from Punta Pacífica to Ciudad Radial. The project cost is approximately $300 million. The work will be divided into two sections: marine and land. The marine section, from Punta Pacífica to Costa del Este, is the most complex and will involve the construction of a new viaduct. The land section will run from Costa del Este to Tocumen. The expansion is expected to reduce travel time during peak hours by 47-50%. Although construction will cause temporary inconveniences, especially on the land section, the impact on the marine section will be minimal, as a new bridge will be built next to the existing one. The project also includes upgrading critical entry and exit points to prevent bottlenecks. The South Corridor serves an average of 65 million vehicles per year, and traffic volume is projected to double by 2049. The growth of residential and commercial areas in the eastern part of the city has exacerbated the congestion problem. The company plans to complete the construction in the first quarter of 2029.
