The Ministry of Commerce and Industries (MICI) plans to authorize this week the processing of the rock material from the Cobre Panamá mine, according to Minister Julio Moltó. The official highlighted that the final resolution to remove and process the material accumulated in the Donoso mine is already underway and will be issued in the coming days. He explained that this measure, which aims to mitigate environmental risks from the prolonged presence of these materials, is a key step to address the consequences of the mining operations' closure in 2023. This resolution is expected to authorize the processing of over 38 million tons of rock material. Once processed, this material will generate around 70 thousand tons of copper concentrate, as estimated by MICI and Cobre Panamá. It should be recalled that in January of this year, the President of the Republic, José Raúl Mulino, ordered the export of this rock material and the accumulated copper concentrate from the Donoso mine, clarifying that this measure did not mean the reopening of mining operations in the country. Recent preliminary reports from the environmental audit of the Donoso mining project have warned about the environmental risk from the exposed rock material, which can cause air and water pollution.
