Federation of Chambers of Commerce Defends Social Security

The Federation of Chambers of Commerce of Panama reaffirms its commitment to social security and food sovereignty, highlighting the importance of the State Agro-Food Policy for the nation's well-being.

The Federation of Chambers of Commerce of Panama, represented by associations from across the country, issued a statement reaffirming its commitment to the defense of social security and food sovereignty for Panamanians. Through this document, the union called on citizens to join in the protection of the social security system and the agricultural sector, fundamental pillars for the well-being of the nation.

Under the slogan “For Panama: Food Sovereignty and Social Security for All”, the federation emphasized that the State Agro-Food Policy (Law 352 of 2023) is a key legal framework to strengthen the country’s self-sufficiency and protect national producers from external practices that may jeopardize the internal market. This law, they assert, is not a matter of interpretation, but strict compliance in the defense of local production and fair competition in the agro-food sector.

"Defending the agricultural sector and social security is not just an act of patriotism, it is a moral obligation to every Panamanian," the statement declares. For the federation, land and labor represent the basis of safety and well-being for the population, and there will be no concession in the fight to keep them safe from external interests that may compromise the country's independence.

Regarding the Social Security Fund (CSS), the federation warns that this institution faces a crucial crossroads that requires the active participation of all of society. They made a special call to Panamanian youth to engage in the debate on the reforms to the Organic Law of the CSS, aware that the decisions made today will impact the well-being of future generations.

"This is a call for everyone to be vigilant and responsible in the upcoming debate in the National Assembly," the statement concludes, referring to the reforms that will define the future of the pension system and the model of the country that Panama wants to build.

The Board of Directors of the federation reaffirmed its commitment to support farmers, entrepreneurs, and all productive actors who daily build a self-sufficient and just nation.
