Twelve families were seriously affected by the intense rains that hit the community of Sinai, located in the Omar Torrijos Herrera district, on the coastal lowlands of the Colón province. The heavy rainfall caused rivers and streams to overflow, entering homes and damaging household belongings in houses where elderly people and children live. The overflow of currents caused the water to reach the homes, sweeping away material goods and causing serious damage to the households. Additionally, the force of the water was so great that some bridges collapsed, leaving families isolated and at risk of being trapped in the middle of the rain. In this situation, local authorities, together with personnel from the National System for Civil Protection (Sinaproc), have begun a damage assessment process in the area to coordinate humanitarian aid and assist the affected families. It is expected that support measures for the victims will be implemented in the coming hours. In recent weeks, the Atlantic coast has been hit by adverse weather conditions, so authorities have issued safety recommendations for the population. Citizens are urged to avoid crossing rivers and abstain from going to the sea, as part of preventive measures against the alert for possible new weather events.
