Intense Rains in Panamanian Provinces Cause Landslides and Flooding

Intense rains recorded throughout most of Saturday caused multiple impacts in the provinces of Herrera and Los Santos, where landslides, road damage, sinkholes, and damage to homes were reported, along with the temporary suspension of the Roberto Reyna water treatment plant.

Among the affected areas, a landslide was reported on San Pedro hill, on the road connecting Los Cerritos with Los Pozos head town, in the Los Pozos district. The mass movement caused by the rains partially obstructed vehicle traffic, so maintenance crews and heavy equipment carried out removal work to ensure safe passage.

Another critical situation was registered on the Pesé – Los Pozos road, in the Rincón Hondo community, where a rising river undermined part of the asphalt pavement, exposing the road structure. Technical personnel from the Ministry of Public Works (MOP) assessed the damage to define the necessary repairs.

In the Las Minas district, impacts were also reported in the sector known as La Yesca del Nanzal, where authorities are maintaining assessments due to possible risks from soil saturation and damage to a ford.

This was compounded by the suspension of operations at the Roberto Reyna water treatment plant in Chitré, which was out of service since the early morning due to high water turbidity, affecting the supply in the district.

Meanwhile, in Los Santos, the rains caused flooding in the Villa Bonita area, where at least 23 homes were affected. Since the early morning, the La Villa River has recorded a significant increase in its flow, generating concern among residents in vulnerable areas.

Authorities toured the affected points and recommended that the population travel with extreme caution, due to the possibility of new floods or landslides caused by soil saturation.

Emergency teams remain deployed in critical points, reported the governor of Herrera, Elías Corro, who indicated that crews from several institutions continue to work to address the incidents caused by the bad weather and protect the residents.
