Two Days of Rain in Colón Province Leave Hundreds of Homes Affected

Heavy rains in Panama's Colón province have damaged nearly 200 homes, causing flooding, landslides, and fallen trees. Hundreds of people have been displaced, with emergency services responding to the crisis.


Heavy rains lasting two days in the province of Colón have resulted in approximately 200 affected homes, according to a situation report from the National Emergency Operations Center (Sinaproc).

One of the hardest-hit areas was the corregimiento (district) of Cativá, where sectors such as San Isidro, Guayabal, and San Pedro A and B were affected. A total of 141 houses were damaged, displacing 503 people, including 332 adults, 175 minors, and 17 people with disabilities.

The community of Nazareno A and B in the corregimiento of Cristóbal was also affected, with 12 houses partially damaged and 25 people (18 adults and 7 minors) impacted. In the district of Chagres, corregimiento of Achiote, 10 homes were flooded, affecting 43 people (27 adults, 16 minors, and one person with a disability).

In this same area, another 21 houses were partially damaged, home to 85 residents (59 adults and 29 minors).

Additionally, incidents involving fallen trees were reported. A tree fell on a house, damaging its roof and displacing two adults. In the district of Chagres, corregimiento of Piña, in an area known as El Tarascon, another tree fell onto a residence.

Affected individuals have been taken in by relatives and neighbors. According to the report, residential flooding was recorded in Cristóbal Este, in the sector of Caan, an informal settlement. Landslides were also reported in the corregimiento of Cativá, in the community of El Polvorín, in the Altos de Zona Libre area.
