Panama Police Boosts Security for 2026 Carnival

With carnivals just around the corner, the National Police is refining its security plan to avoid tragedies and incidents that could mar the festivities. The director of the institution, Jaime Fernández, confirmed that around 9,000 units will be deployed nationwide during the 2026 operation. The focus will be on roads, public swimming areas, high-traffic zones, and mass gathering points, where accidents and public order disturbances have historically been recorded. Traffic control, preventive patrols, and constant presence will be part of the daily work. Fernández recalled that last year's operation was a success, with no homicides reported during the festivities. "The priority is to protect the people and also our units," the police chief stressed, noting that there will be strict checks, sanctions for offenders, and permanent surveillance to ensure safe coexistence. Controls and citizen verification are being strengthened during the carnival festivities. Citizen verification controls will be strengthened as part of the operation. Authorities indicated that technological verification devices will be used to check identities and backgrounds, especially in high-traffic areas, roads, and festive zones, with the aim of preventing crimes and locating individuals wanted by the law. The plan includes mobile operations, checkpoints, and strategic patrols, focused on both crime prevention and traffic control to reduce accidents during the celebration days.
