Thermal drone helps catch burglars in Panama

Three criminals were apprehended while attempting to break into a commercial establishment through the roof in the Villa Lobos sector, Pedregal district, thanks to thermal images captured by a high-tech drone. According to the National Police, the alert was triggered at the National Operations Center (CON) when a drone caught the crime in progress, prompting several units from the San Miguelito area to be deployed to the scene. The suspects, unaware they were being watched from the air, lay flat on the building's roof trying to hide from the officers, but they could not escape and were caught in the act. The video clearly shows the thermal image of the three individuals walking on the roof, captured in real time. Once located, the police confiscated a ladder, cutting and demolition tools, and a pry bar from the suspects, evidence of their intention to force the establishment's roof. "This action highlights the effective use of unmanned aerial vehicles by police units, a key tool in the fight against crime in urban environments," the entity emphasized. At the conclusion of the operation, the three individuals were taken to the nearest police station and then handed over to the Public Ministry for the prosecution of the frustrated theft. Since last year, the National Police announced the use of drones to strengthen security and surveillance, mainly in "red zones," but this is the first time that images captured with this technology have been released.
