He claimed that a gust of wind capsized the boat and assured that everyone was wearing life jackets. The boat's pilot was detained while his responsibility is being determined. In the incident, at least two Panamanian women died. The Volunteer Fire Corps of Sololá reported that the victims were between 28 and 40 years old, while four other people were rescued and suffered nervous crises after the shipwreck. In an official statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the death of the two Panamanians, whose identities are still being verified, and noted that the search for a person who was presumably also traveling on the vessel continues. According to preliminary information, the boat capsized due to strong gusts of wind and the climatic phenomenon known as Xocomil, common in that area of the lake. On Thursday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Panama confirmed that most of the travelers on the boat that capsized in Lake Atitlán, in western Guatemala, were Panamanians, and the ministry is following up on the case.
