Bus driver arrested after passenger's death in Panama

A bus driver in Panama has been arrested after his vehicle crashed, killing a passenger. Users of the route report systematic violations by drivers, including speeding, driving in the wrong lane, and fare hikes.

These buses not only exceed the speed limit but also travel in the wrong direction during peak hours, risking the lives of passengers. The Public Ministry confirmed on Saturday the arrest of the driver of a minibus on the Santa Rita (Pacora)-La Doña route, which crashed on Thursday and caused the death of a passenger. Users have reported that since 8:30 p.m., the availability of buses decreases while waiting for 9:00 p.m. These buses have a capacity of 14 people and travel at full capacity during morning and evening hours. The man was charged with aggravated negligent homicide following the rollover that occurred on Thursday, February 5, on the road leading to Cerro Azul. The situation has caused dissatisfaction among users of this service, who have exposed the chaotic management they must endure. A witness to the accident, through social media, said the bus was speeding and before reaching the roundabout, attempted to change lanes, losing control. It is not unusual that after passing the traffic jam from the neighborhood to the entrance of Cerro Azul, drivers exceed the speed limits, users told this medium. The provisional detention of the driver was made at the request of the Metropolitan Homicide and Femicide Section. Likewise, the fare, which is usually 0.50 cents, increases from 9:00 p.m. and on holidays to 1 dollar.
