An ocelot was run over in the community of Gamboa, which belongs to the corregimiento of Cristóbal, in the province of Colón. The animal was transferred to the Wildlife Veterinary Clinic of the Ministry of Environment (MiAmbiente), where veterinarians conducted the corresponding evaluation, determining its death. The report of the wild feline being run over was made by rangers from Soberanía National Park. Likewise, blood and feces samples were collected for epidemiological and health analysis. These samples are part of a wildlife biodiversity database that the environmental entity is developing, mainly focused on felines, with the aim of knowing the health status of wildlife populations and detecting possible diseases or health risks. Therefore, MiAmbiente called on drivers to reduce speed and drive with caution, especially on roads that cross national parks such as Camino de Cruces and Soberanía, as well as in rural areas and zones near biological corridors, due to the frequent crossing of wild species. Similarly, the institution urges promoting respect and protection for wildlife, in order to reduce roadkill and preserve biodiversity, avoiding regrettable losses for the balance of ecosystems and species conservation.
