The phenomenon of independent bands in Panama is a unique blend of music, discipline, and social alternative. These bands, comprising over 25,000 participants, many of whom are elderly, have replaced the traditional carnival comparsas and become a permanent fixture in the country's national festivals. Organized into two federations, FEPABI and FENABIP, they collectively invest more than 5 million balboas annually in costumes and footwear. Despite their growth and recognition, this phenomenon holds immense potential for further development. To fully unlock it, Panama's Ministry of Culture and Tourism should act as an official promoter, integrating the federations to establish an annual Independent Bands Parade. Such an institutionalized event, complete with judging and awards, has the potential to become a major national and tourist attraction, much like the Thousand Polleras Parade. The success of this cultural movement is built on the healthy competition among the groups, which makes the festivities truly vibrant and memorable.
