Can a kiss transmit cavities?

A dentistry specialist explains that bacteria causing cavities can be transmitted from adults to children through saliva. Learn about simple preventive measures to protect the dental health of your loved ones.

Can a kiss transmit cavities?

According to cosmetic and regenerative dentistry specialist Vivian Menéndez, although cavities do not 'spread' like a cold, the bacteria that cause them can be transmitted between people, especially through saliva. According to Dr. Menéndez, babies are born without bacteria in their mouths, so they usually acquire them from close adults, especially mothers, by sharing utensils or kissing on the mouth. Vivian Menéndez suggests simple but effective ways to prevent the spread of oral bacteria: brush your teeth after every meal, avoid sharing utensils or toothbrushes, don't kiss babies or small children on the mouth, and visit the dentist regularly for cleanings and check-ups. 'Prevention begins at home,' concludes the doctor. 'That film of food debris that is not removed by brushing is the perfect environment for bacteria to act.' The specialist emphasizes that cavities are a multifactorial infection, influenced by hygiene, diet, and care habits. In this way, daily habits can facilitate the transmission of the bacteria that eventually cause cavities. 'There are certain bacteria, specifically Streptococcus mutans, that are capable of destroying tooth enamel through the acids they produce,' she explained. She added: 'These acids form when food debris remains on the teeth, and the bacteria take advantage of it to multiply.' 'When we are adults, most of us already have Streptococcus mutans in our saliva, but for a cavity to develop, it is also necessary that there is dental plaque,' she clarifies. 'Caring for your oral hygiene not only protects your smile, but also the smiles of the people you love most.'
