The Regional Health Directorate announced that the San Isidro Health Policentro, a project delayed for over seven years, will finally open its doors to residents of the San Miguelito district at the end of December and begin formal operations in 2026. Due to its location adjacent to the Transístmica highway, the medical center is ideal for handling cases from San Miguelito and Northern Panama. District residents eagerly await its reopening to avoid traveling to distant facilities for medical care. Located near a metro station, the center will have a capacity for over 30,000 people. Last June, authorities reported that the project was 82% complete; however, it was not inaugurated in August as planned. The new opening date, according to Yaviletsy Centella, director of Health for San Miguelito, will be at the end of December. Engineering GER, S.A. will provide maintenance on the structure until July 31, 2028, i.e., 3 years after delivery if the new date is met. The new center will offer laboratory, pharmacy, general medicine, dentistry, pediatrics, family medicine, psychology, dermatology, radiology, minor surgery, electrodiagnosis, physical medicine, rehabilitation, and other services. The project was originally scheduled for completion in September 2019; however, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was postponed to June 2023, followed by multiple delays that increased its cost from $25 million to $35.1 million. The latest addendum to the contract with Alca Holding Int.
