Panama Reports Significant Increase in Respiratory Illnesses

Over 5,400 cases reported in Veraguas province. Authorities urge citizens to take precautions and seek medical care.


Health authorities reported a significant increase in respiratory disease cases in the Veraguas province, which already exceeds 5,400 affected people, according to data from the Ministry of Health (MINSA). According to records, weekly, between 150 and 250 patients with respiratory symptoms are treated at various medical centers in the region. Chong assured that emergency rooms, hospitals, polyclinics, and health centers in the province are prepared and with the capacity to care for patients presenting with respiratory conditions, ensuring timely care. Health authorities reiterated the call to the population not to let their guard down, follow official recommendations, and go to the nearest health centers if they present symptoms, in order to protect individual and collective health in the province of Veraguas. Dr. Ricardo Chong, an epidemiologist at MINSA, explained that the most frequent symptoms include cough, nasal congestion, fever, and difficulty breathing, so he reiterated the importance of reinforcing prevention measures to avoid a greater spread of these ailments. On the other hand, the Ministry of Health also reported an increase in cases of other transmissible diseases, such as malaria and dengue, so it urged citizens to adopt strict prevention measures, including eliminating mosquito breeding sites and promptly seeking medical attention for any symptoms. Among the main recommendations, the specialist urged the population to use masks, maintain frequent hand washing, and keep a distance between people, especially when coughing or sneezing. In addition, he recalled that it is essential to cover your mouth and nose when sneezing to reduce the risk of contagion.
