Panama Issues Flood Warning Due to Heavy Rains

Panama's meteorological institute warns of increased rainfall and flooding in the Caribbean region. Authorities urge residents to stay informed and be prepared for evacuations.

The Panama Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (Imhpa) highlights that these conditions increase the likelihood of swollen rivers, floods, landslides, and waterlogging in the Caribbean slope and Central Cordillera. According to Imhpa, a new increase in rains is forecast from Wednesday, February 5, to Saturday, February 7, due to the displacement of another cold front within the Caribbean Basin. 'The notice says we must remain alert because the situation (rain, winds, and waves) will likely continue with the arrival of another cold front,' said Smith on Telemetro Reporta Matutino. Forecast by meteorologist Pilar López. According to Smith, in light of this new notice, the main recommendation is to stay informed and be prepared to know when an evacuation will occur. Regarding the vessels stranded in Colón, he said the ships are in the process of being towed away from the coast. He also said that crossing bodies of water should be avoided as floods have been reported. 'The recommendation for small boats is that if it happened to a larger vessel, imagine what could happen to an artisanal one. The recommendation is to avoid setting sail,' he reiterated. The Panama Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (Imhpa) issued a watch notice informing that rains in the Caribbean east are expected to continue until February 7, 2026. 'Rains in the East of the Caribbean are expected to continue on February 4 due to the remnants of the frontal system located in the Caribbean Basin,' it specified. Meanwhile, Omar Smith, director of the National System for Civil Protection (Sinaproc), warned about the arrival of a new cold front and asked the population to be attentive to communications from the authorities and in some areas to be prepared for evacuations, as floods have been reported. MiAmbiente did the same by closing, as a preventive measure, access to Campana Park. Smith specified that from Sinaproc they are 'very attentive to what the Maritime Authority comments.' He added that it is better to avoid outdoor activities while the weather event lasts, but if it is unavoidable, he asked the population to be aware of falling objects such as roof collapses or falling trees. 'We have one person injured by a falling object from a height and their condition is reserved,' he added. 'It is important to indicate that we had 34 roof collapses and 41 fallen trees in different places,' Smith summarized. Watch Notice for Persistent Rains by Frontal System Valid until 11:59 a.m. on February 7, 2026.
