Ciudad de la Salud Health: Success in PE Treatment

Ciudad de la Salud successfully performed its tenth procedure for acute pulmonary embolism (PE) using a hybrid operating room. This advanced technology allows for the extraction of blood clots, improving patient prognosis and quality of life.

The Ciudad de la Salud integrates open surgery, endovascular techniques, and hybrid procedures, positioning itself as a national and regional benchmark in the comprehensive treatment of PE, benefiting patients from across the country. The procedure was led by Dr. Humberto Juárez, a cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon, and took place in a hybrid operating room, a state-of-the-art technological platform that allows for the performance of complex endovascular procedures, available only at the Ciudad de la Salud. One was successfully performed at the National Cardiovascular and Thoracic Center of the Ciudad de la Salud. This is a state-of-the-art procedure used to treat acute pulmonary thromboembolism (PE), a potentially fatal condition. Thanks to timely and specialized care, the procedure was completed in approximately one hour, with a favorable clinical course and a significant improvement in the patient's prognosis and quality of life. Acute pulmonary thromboembolism constitutes a high-risk medical emergency capable of causing right heart failure, respiratory arrest, or prolonged dependence on oxygen. This result marks the tenth procedure of this type performed at the Ciudad de la Salud, consolidating a milestone in the management of this critical pathology. According to the Social Security Fund (CSS), the procedure allows for the direct extraction of clots that obstruct blood circulation in the lungs, which immediately improves the patient's oxygenation and reduces the risk of serious complications or permanent sequelae. The most recent case corresponded to a kidney transplant recipient and immunosuppressed patient, who developed deep vein thrombosis after a viral condition, which led to an acute episode of PE.
