Successful Pulmonary Clot Removal Operation at Ciudad de la Salud

The National Cardiothoracic Center of Ciudad de la Salud successfully performed a mechanical pulmonary thrombectomy. This is a state-of-the-art procedure used to treat acute pulmonary embolism (PE), a potentially fatal condition. According to the Social Security Fund, the intervention allows for the direct removal of blood clots obstructing circulation in the lungs, which immediately improves the patient's oxygenation and reduces the risk of serious complications or permanent sequelae. The most recent case involved a kidney transplant patient who was immunosuppressed and developed deep vein thrombosis after a viral illness, which led to an acute episode of PE. The intervention was led by cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon Dr. Humberto Juárez and was carried out in a hybrid operating room, a state-of-the-art technological platform that allows for complex endovascular procedures, available only at Ciudad de la Salud. Acute pulmonary embolism constitutes a high-risk medical emergency capable of causing right heart failure, respiratory arrest, or prolonged dependence on oxygen. Faced with this challenge, Ciudad de la Salud integrates open surgery, endovascular techniques, and hybrid procedures, positioning itself as a national and regional benchmark in the comprehensive treatment of PE for the benefit of patients from across the country. Thanks to timely and specialized care, the procedure was completed in approximately an hour, with favorable clinical progress and a significant improvement in the patient's prognosis and quality of life. This represents the tenth procedure of this type performed at Ciudad de la Salud, consolidating a milestone in the management of this critical pathology.
