A new blow to the environment was detected within the El Montoso Forest Reserve, in the province of Herrera, where at least 1.5 hectares of forest were illegally cleared. The illegal action caused direct damage to the ecosystem and affected two important water sources that originate within this protected area, including the La Villa River, the main water source for the provinces of Herrera and Los Santos. The discovery was made during a monitoring and surveillance patrol carried out by reserve rangers, in conjunction with units of the Environmental Police. These officials entered the Los Caranganos sector, in the district of Chepo, and found an intervened area where the forest cover had been eliminated. What most concerns the authorities is that the logging was carried out in a secondary forest that had been in a process of natural regeneration for about 10 years, which represents a significant setback in the ecosystem's recovery. According to Saturnino Aizprúa, head of the El Montoso Forest Reserve, native species of great ecological value predominated in the affected area, including nance, malagueta, espavé, black wood and river almond, trees essential for the biodiversity of the place and for the natural protection of water sources. During the inspection, technical staff also confirmed that the illegal intervention affected two water springs, raising concerns about the impact this type of action can have on the environmental balance and the water resources that supply nearby communities. After the discovery, officials proceeded to collect technical information in the field, a necessary step to document the magnitude of the environmental damage and support the corresponding legal actions. So far, those responsible for the logging have not been located, despite the inspection and monitoring work carried out in the area. However, the authorities confirmed that investigations have already begun to identify the offenders. The case will be brought before the Public Ministry, where a formal complaint will be filed for the damage caused within this protected area, in accordance with current environmental regulations.
