The National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc) has issued a statement to the population informing that a Yellow Alert has been declared in the provinces of Colón, Veraguas, Herrera, and the Guna Yala comarca due to prolonged rain and the presence of significant storms. For the rest of the country, a Green Alert has been established, which will take effect starting at 9:00 p.m. on this Sunday, October 27, 2024.
This preventive measure is based on a technical report from the Panamanian Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (IMHPA) which indicates the activation of the intertropical convergence zone and a low-pressure system to the north of the national territory, increasing atmospheric instability and precipitation levels throughout the country.
Rain accumulations between 40 and 70 millimeters are forecasted for the Caribbean slope and Darién for Monday, October 28, while for the rest of the country, it is expected to range between 10 and 35 millimeters. In light of this situation, the Emergency Operations Center has intensified surveillance and monitoring.
Sinaproc issues recommendations to the population, including staying informed through official sources, avoiding outdoor activities in vulnerable places such as trails, lakes, beaches, and rivers, being cautious of possible river floods and flooded streets, paying special attention to children, the elderly, and people with disabilities, and in comarca areas, avoiding crossing rivers and streams to prevent being caught by water currents.
In this context, it is essential that the population closely follows the authorities' instructions and takes the necessary preventive measures to ensure their safety and that of their loved ones.
