Ruben Blades Urges Panama to Prepare for Trump's Threats

The Panamanian singer-songwriter Rubén Blades has urged the Government of Panama to take Donald Trump's threats regarding the Panama Canal seriously and to prepare for any actions the U.S. administration may take, including possible military intervention. Blades warns that Trump's true objective is the Panama Canal and suggests that the narcissistic president seeks to leave his mark in history in the same way as the presidents immortalized at Mount Rushmore.

Blades points out that Panama must prepare for a possible U.S. military intervention, which, although illegal, would not have the same democratic justification as the one that occurred in 1989 when the United States overthrew General Manuel Antonio Noriega. The singer urges the Panamanian government not to underestimate Trump's threats and to respond firmly and decisively.

Moreover, Blades advises Panama not to remain silent in the face of provocations from the U.S. president and to seek international allies to support its rejection of unfounded accusations. The singer warns about Trump's narcissism, his admiration for authoritarian leaders, and his lack of scruples, factors he considers dangerous in this situation.

Since Trump's inauguration, there has been speculation about his interest in controlling the Panama Canal, citing alleged Chinese presence in the area and discontent with toll rates. Blades criticizes the U.S. president's stance, arguing that his accusations are unfounded and that his antagonism toward China is contradictory given the trading relations between the two countries.

The Panama Canal, an important global trade route built by the United States and transferred to Panama in 1999, has become the center of attention due to Trump's statements. With an extension of 82 kilometers and a key role in global trade, the canal represents a strategic asset for Panama and a point of interest for various international actors.
