The Panama Canal has been a symbol of sacrifice and struggle for Panamanians, and its recovery represented a significant achievement of national sovereignty, as explained by the rector in an open letter. The Academic Council of the University of Panama made an emphatic call for national unity in light of the aggressions from Donald Trump, which have generated a wave of fears and threats affecting democratic institutions.
In the letter addressed to the President of the United States, a call is highlighted to analyze Trump's statements about the Panama Canal in the context of history and the bilateral relations between both countries. Furthermore, the Panamanian people are urged to maintain national unity in times of uncertainty.
The Academic Council considers that President Trump's attacks appear to be aimed at constructing a new world order, based on ideological proposals of the new conservative right, which are far from the principles of equity and social justice. The rector, Dr. Eduardo Flores Castro, questioned the use of social media and a contemptuous and aggressive language, filled with lies, which seeks to attract resentful and discontented followers with the social system.
The University of Panama categorically rejects any intervention attempt that harms the dignity and the legitimate right of the Panamanian nation to live in peace, without subjugation that affects its freedom as a sovereign country, owner of its own land and intransferable destiny.
