The president of the Association of Residents and Naturalized Citizens of Panama (Arena), Rafael Rodríguez, issued a warning about a potential increase in the arrival of Venezuelans to Panama, motivated by the recent decisions of Presidents Donald Trump and Nicolás Maduro.
According to Rodríguez, the entry of foreigners of various nationalities through Darién towards the United States has decreased significantly as a result of the closure of the U.S. border and Trump’s strict immigration policies. Despite this, there is concern that a massive flow of Venezuelans may decide to traverse the jungle and opt to stay in Panama to escape the economic and political measures imposed by Maduro.
"Panamanian authorities must be alert, as this situation could exceed our response capacity," Rodríguez warned. He emphasized that due to the inability to cross into the U.S. from Mexico, many migrants may consider returning to Panama as a more viable alternative due to its current greater economic stability.
The Association of Residents and Naturalized Citizens of Panama called on authorities to intensify border surveillance and implement immigration policies that allow for controlling this situation without jeopardizing national stability.
