The guarantor judge of the First Judicial Circuit of Panama, Fermín Bonilla, issued personal precautionary measures against two students from the University of Panama, a woman and a man aged 22 and 43 respectively. The young people are being accused of crimes such as personal injuries and obstructing police work.
In the hearing held on Tuesday, February 4, the judge argued that the precautionary measures were necessary and proportional to the severity of the facts and the procedural risks associated with the case. Prosecutor Lorenza Gutiérrez from the Public Ministry presented the charges, declaring the man's apprehension legal, but the woman's illegal.
The defense of the accused was led by lawyers Jorge Castañeda and Alfredo González, while the victims' representation was handled by lawyer José Luis Guerra from the legal advisory department of the National Police. Both parties announced an appeal against the guarantor judge's decision.
The case originated during a university protest on the Transístmica road on January 31. The next hearing before the Superior Court of Appeals is scheduled for February 12 at 2:00 p.m. in courtroom number two in Plaza Fortuna.
