Panama's President Defends Sovereignty Against External Pressures

The President of the Republic, José Raúl Mulino, emphasized that he will continue to defend Panama's interests with transparency and determination, without yielding to external pressures. In a conversation with U.S. Secretary of Defense, Peter Hanhset, key issues such as security and migration were discussed.

Cooperation in security, the migration crisis, and the possible repatriation of migrants from the border with Mexico to countries like Venezuela and Colombia were discussed. It was also mentioned that there had been a significant reduction in the flow of migrants through Darién, from 2,229 people in January 2023 to just 43 in the same period of 2024. Panama's interest in expanding the memorandum of understanding with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security was highlighted.

One of the most controversial points was the denial of the authority to set tolls on the Panama Canal, where Mulino explained that constitutionally the president cannot intervene in that decision. He rejected the Department of State's claims based on falsehoods and made it clear that Panama will not accept relationships based on incorrect information.

Mulino ordered to refute the information issued by the Department of State and reaffirmed the independence of the Panama Canal administration. Regarding relations with China and the U.S., the cancellation of Panama's participation in the Belt and Road Initiative was announced, and an audit of Panama Ports Company, operator of the country's main ports, was highlighted, whose results will guide future decisions.

The president stressed the importance of the relationship with the U.S. but made it clear that he will not tolerate interference in Panamanian sovereignty or imposed decisions from abroad. Mulino closed by reaffirming his commitment to the Constitution and national sovereignty, demonstrating firmness in his positions.
