Controversy Surrounds Former UDELAS Rector

The guarantees judge of the First Judicial Circuit of Panama, Mariela Quezada, authorized the accumulation of processes in the criminal case against the former rector of the University Specialized in Americas (UDELAS), Juan Bosco Bernal, and another citizen, indicted for the crime against life and personal integrity, in the form of psychological personal injuries.

In the guarantees control hearing held on Thursday, February 6, 2025, Judge Quezada, after listening to the arguments of the parties, admitted the request of Prosecutor Laura Morales, which was not objected to by either the private technical defense or the plaintiff. The decision was based on Article 36 of the Criminal Procedure Code, which allows for the accumulation of processes when two or more distinct actions are followed against the same individual or for the same crime.

The defense of the indicted was led by lawyer Juan Kuam and Jeysen Ortega, while the plaintiff was represented by lawyer Javier Quintero. The investigations began following a complaint filed with the Public Ministry on September 19, 2023, for the crime of personal injuries.
