Presidential Crackdown on Union Violence in Panama

The President of the Republic of Panama, José Raúl Mulino, strongly condemned the violent acts carried out by construction workers during a protest in the capital of the country. Mulino stated that his government will not allow such actions and will take firm measures against those responsible for these disturbances.

In his statements, Mulino described the events as "deplorable" and made it clear that his administration will not tolerate violence instigated by unions. He expressed that they will exercise state authority to contain the perpetrators and will make necessary decisions regarding this type of behavior.

The president urged the Panamanian Chamber of Construction (CAPAC) not to support what he described as "a terrorist union organization." He suggested that business owners review their relationship with the union and criticized the use of collective bargaining as a shield for criminal activities.

Mulino expressed his support for the National Police, especially the Crowd Control Unit that faced the disturbances, and praised their bravery. He also warned the Public Ministry and the Accusatory Criminal System that he expects a thorough investigation without impunity.

The head of state emphasized that the violent actions recorded do not constitute a legitimate union protest, but rather a premeditated organized act. He highlighted the effectiveness of the police response that led to the detention of several individuals involved in the disturbances.

In response to the incidents, Mulino announced the closure of the hospital under construction where the events took place until the corresponding investigation is completed. He reported that around 480 protesters are in police custody and assured that their rights will be respected.

The president revealed that an audit of the funds received by the National Union of Construction Workers and Similar (Suntracs) from governmental entities had been requested. He announced that disbursements to Suntracs and any other union organization will be suspended until the use of those funds is clarified.
