83 Arrests Following Violent Protests in Panama

Following violent confrontations on February 12, 2025, Panama's Attorney General announced the legal detention of 83 individuals during protests against a controversial construction project. The clashes involved construction workers and the National Police.

After the violent clashes on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, on Avenida Balboa, the Attorney General of the Nation reported on the legalization of the detention of 83 people. These detentions, requested by the Public Ministry, were addressed in a guarantees hearing on Friday, February 14, 2025. The charges presented include crimes against collective security, property damage, personal injuries, and other offenses.

The disturbances occurred at the construction site of the new Children's Hospital, during a protest by construction workers, specifically members of the National Unified Union of Construction Workers and Similar (Suntracs). The clashes with the National Police were violent, with reports of protesters throwing blocks, rods, and other materials, resulting in injuries to several police units.

According to reports, the workers expressed their discontent against bill 163, which reforms the Social Security Agency (CSS) law. President José Raúl Mulino condemned the violence and criticized the use of the Children's Hospital construction site as a barricade for the violence, stating that he would not tolerate anarchy and that criminal behavior was unworthy of the country.

In this context, the president made it clear that the nation did not deserve such actions and that he would not allow public order to be undermined.
