The Unique Union of Construction Workers and Similar (Suntracs) has announced the organization of a march and a strike as a warning measure in Panama. This action is taking place amidst negotiations for the renewal of the collective agreement in the construction sector.
The Panamanian Chamber of Construction (Capac) has expressed its position regarding this situation, warning that it will deduct a day’s pay from employees who decide to join the strike called by Suntracs. According to Capac, the announced strike would affect about 200 companies in the sector, generating a significant impact on the construction industry in the country.
In response to these statements, Saúl Méndez, general secretary of Suntracs, has highlighted the importance of mobilization as a legitimate way to exert pressure in negotiations and guarantee the rights of workers in the sector. Méndez has reiterated the union's willingness to defend the working conditions of construction employees in Panama.
This tension between Suntracs and Capac reflects the challenges in labor negotiations in the construction sector in the country. While the union seeks improvements in benefits and working conditions for workers, construction companies aim to maintain stability and competitiveness in a key sector for the Panamanian economy.
