Ombudsman and SUNTRACS Address Human Rights

The Ombudsman met with SUNTRACS to discuss reports of human rights violations against workers, including assaults and bank account closures.

The Ombudsman, Eduardo Leblanc González, met with the general secretary of the Unified Union of Construction Workers and Similar (SUNTRACS), Saúl Méndez, to discuss complaints about incidents on Avenida Balboa. Méndez reported violations of human rights, including physical assaults on workers, denial of the right to defense by preventing the entry of union lawyers, and closure of the organization's bank accounts.

In the meeting, the Deputy Ombudsman, Clarissa Martínez, and several directors of the Ombudsman's Office were also present. SUNTRACS reiterated its demand for respect for the rights of its members, urging authorities to take measures to prevent future assaults. The Ombudsman’s Office committed to following up on the complaints and ensuring respect for fundamental guarantees.

At the end of the meeting, Leblanc assured that the information gathered would be included in a file and sent to the relevant authorities for evaluation. Regarding the closure of SUNTRACS bank accounts, Leblanc explained that while the BNP can close accounts under contractual terms, its decisions must align with public interest and not violate fundamental rights.
