Panama has expressed support for dialogue and consensus in the UN Security Council regarding resolutions related to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. During the recent session at the General Assembly, Panama opted for abstention in several votes, demonstrating its commitment to promoting peaceful and lasting solutions for the crisis in Eastern Europe.

Panama's Foreign Minister, Javier Martínez-Acha, explained that the country's position is based on the quest for peace and mutual understanding among the parties involved in the conflict. Martínez-Acha highlighted that while Panama adheres to the principles of the United Nations Charter, on this occasion they considered that the proposed resolutions did not contain the necessary elements to foster the desired peace.

Panama showed its support for negotiation and dialogue as pathways to ending the conflict, avoiding resolutions that could hinder an effective peace process in the future. In the General Assembly, Panama abstained in the vote on a resolution proposed by Ukraine, as well as on amendments presented by the European Union to the proposal from the United States. Additionally, it voted against a resolution presented by Russia.

In the Security Council, Panama backed a resolution promoted by the United States that advocated for a simpler path to peace and urged a swift end to the conflict, calling for lasting peace between Ukraine and Russia. The resolution, approved with 10 votes in favor and 5 abstentions, received the support of Panama along with other countries like China and Russia.

Panama's position in this international context seeks to maintain its commitment to promoting dialogue, consensus, and peace, aligning itself with the principles of the United Nations and advocating for peaceful and lasting solutions amid the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
