The Panama Canal is and will always be Panamanian

The president of Panama, José Raúl Mulino, reiterated today, Thursday, that the Panama Canal, coveted by the United States, "is and always will be Panamanian." In a public message, the leader shared an image with text in Spanish and English: "The truth is the reality. The canal is and always will be Panamanian," accompanied by representative photos of five key years in the history of the conquest and celebration of the sovereignty of the interoceanic route.

Firstly, it refers to the year 1964, in which the events of January 9 took place, an occurrence in which 21 Panamanians were killed by the U.S. army and the ties with the United States were severed until Washington finally accepted to review its relations regarding the Canal.

Subsequently, it mentions the year 1977, when the treaties were signed between the Panamanian leader Omar Torrijos and then U.S. President Jimmy Carter, establishing the transfer of the route to Panama on December 31, 1999, a date that is also highlighted in the image.

The image also includes the year 2007, when the Panamanian administration began the expansion of the Panama Canal by constructing a third set of locks. Finally, it alludes to the year 2025 as the time when the 25th anniversary of Panama managing the Canal will be celebrated.
