Lawyer and political analyst Luis Fuentes Montenegro expressed his concern over the recent threat from Donald Trump, President of the United States, to use the military to take control of the Panama Canal. This statement has provoked rejection among the Panamanian population, raising concerns about a possible violation of national sovereignty.
Fuentes Montenegro emphasized that the history of interventions by the United States in Panama is a constant worry, with episodes dating back to the 19th century, including the 1989 invasion, an event that still resonates in the collective memory of the country. In light of this threat, the analyst warned that it would be a flagrant violation of International Law and an act of imperialist abuse.
The analyst also pointed out that any attempt at unilateral military intervention by the United States would be unacceptable and would put Panama in a position of extreme vulnerability. Should these threats materialize, Fuentes Montenegro urged the Panamanian Government to react immediately and forcefully, demanding explanations and reaffirming the country's sovereignty in international terms.
Furthermore, the lawyer expressed his surprise at what he perceives as a campaign of pressure and destabilization against the current Panamanian government, despite efforts to maintain strong diplomatic relations with the United States. On the other hand, Guillermo Cochez, also a lawyer and diplomat, described Trump's threat as absurd and in violation of international law, warning about the presence of US soldiers in Panama that could be related to these tensions.
Cochez expressed his concern over the lack of transparency in the Panamanian Government's communication regarding its relationship with the United States and the commitments that may have been established to address Trump's threats. In this context, the stance of lawyers and diplomats highlights the need to maintain Panama's sovereignty and avoid any external military intervention that could jeopardize the country's stability.
