Panama requested the Organization of American States (OAS) for a "strong and unanimous" backing of Panama's sovereignty over the Panama Canal. This request was made by the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Panama to the OAS during a virtual meeting of the Permanent Council of that organization.
The ambassador emphasized the strategic importance of the Panama Canal for global trade and the need to safeguard the country's sovereignty over this crucial interoceanic route. He also expressed Panama's desire to have the support of all member countries of the OAS on this matter.
In relation to this request, the Panamanian ambassador proposed Panama as the host for the OAS General Assembly in 2026, as a gesture of confidence in the country's commitment to the principles and values of the organization.
The response from representatives of other member countries of the OAS was immediate, showing support for Panama's sovereignty over the Canal and recognizing the fundamental role it plays in the regional and international context.
In a constructive diplomatic environment, the importance of maintaining open and respectful dialogue among member countries to address issues of common interest and strengthen hemispheric cooperation was reaffirmed.
