The National Council of Journalism of Panama (Conape) has expressed its rejection of any form of intimidation or aggression against journalists covering protests in the country. The guild urged communicators to immediately report any incident that affects their integrity in the exercise of their professional duties.
In a statement issued, Conape emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of journalists and their freedom to report objectively on events in the country. It also reminded authorities of their responsibility to protect communication professionals while performing their work.
"It is essential that the work of the press is respected and that their safety is ensured at all times. Journalists must be able to carry out their work without fear of reprisals or aggression," highlighted the National Council of Journalism of Panama.
In light of the increasing cases of harassment against journalists in the context of protests, Conape called on Panamanian society to reflect on the importance of a safe environment for the practice of journalism. Freedom of the press and respect for communicators are fundamental pillars of a healthy and transparent democracy.
