Panama's Mining Controversy Continues Unresolved

The mineral resources of Panamanian soil are the property of all Panamanians, according to Minister of Trade and Industry Julio Moltó. The official emphatically denied reports suggesting secret agreements between the government and the mining company. Moltó mentioned that the company decided to voluntarily suspend arbitrations against the state to establish a communication channel, although no formal dialogue has been initiated yet.

On the other hand, the President of the Republic, José Rafael Mulino, reiterated the government's stance of total transparency regarding the situation of the mine, stating that it remains closed and belongs to the Panamanian people. Mulino emphasized that Panama belongs to all citizens and dismissed any possibility of ceding territory or violating national sovereignty.

In economic terms, authorities warned that the stoppages are seriously affecting the country's development, with the Minister of Labor estimating daily losses of at least 90 million dollars, particularly harming the most vulnerable sectors. The government expressed its willingness to engage in dialogue as long as institutions are respected and the general benefit is sought.

Javier Collins Agnew from La Verdad Panamá reported that authorities have extended an offer to initiate conversations, but have denounced the refusal of some social leaders to participate. Minister of Trade and Industry Julio Moltó was emphatic in stating the president's willingness to engage in serious dialogue without deception, assuring that there is nothing hidden in the process. Amid protests and strikes, the possibility of a referendum to determine the future of the mining project is being raised, although it has not been confirmed if this is part of the government's immediate plans. In this context, the government emphasizes its commitment to transparency and responsibility in handling the situation.
