Panama Delivers Over 150 Property Titles

Panama's land authority delivered over 150 property titles to residents of the Rio Indio basin. This 20-year-old process aims to provide legal security and foster social and economic development in the region.

The National Land Authority (Anati), along with the Technical Support Unit of the Land Titulation Program in the Panama Canal Basin and the Panama Canal Authority (ACP), delivered over 150 property titles, benefiting approximately 600 people in the Rio Indio basin region.

The Administrator of the Panama Canal Authority, Ricaurte Vásquez, highlighted the legal importance of having a property title.

The land titulation process, which has lasted over 20 years in the Panama Canal Basin, receives technical assistance from the United Nations Development Programme as part of an integrated strategy for inclusive, equitable, and sustainable territorial governance.

Rosario Cárdenas, Deputy Administrator of Anati, stated that each title delivered is a recognition of the communities' efforts, "a promise fulfilled and a firm step towards the Panama we all dream of".

One of the biggest challenges for the ACP is to sensitize the rural community to the reservoirs on the Rio Indio, to which many peasants are opposed.

Anati plays a fundamental role in validating and formalizing the property rights of families living in the Rio Indio area, providing them with legal security and opening opportunities for their social and economic development, according to the entity.
