Criminal Complaint Filed in Disappearance and Murder Case of Esteban de León in Panama

Panama – On Wednesday, lawyer Omar Jaén, on behalf of the family of Esteban de León, filed a criminal complaint for homicide, kidnapping, and robbery against the two individuals apprehended for their alleged involvement in his disappearance and death. The attorney stated that although the family speculated that Esteban might have died of a heart attack, there are sufficient elements to support the violent nature of the crime. The lawyers representing the plaintiffs are the 'voice of the voiceless,' as Esteban's crime was so atrocious that it left open social wounds. Furthermore, he mentioned that since the system initially failed Esteban (authorities waited a certain time to act), the lawyers will see it through to the end to ensure this is not repeated, that justice is served, and strict legal standards are applied. In this case, Arturo David Hansell, alias 'Pagoda' (24 years old), and Abdiel Oglivie, alias 'Tatín' (20 years old), were apprehended in early November and brought before a guarantees judge who declared the apprehension legal, admitted the charges for aggravated homicide, aggravated robbery, illegal association for deprivation of liberty, and applied the most severe precautionary measure (provisional detention). Among the evidence highlighted are the condition of the body and subsequent actions, such as the sale of his vehicle for 400 balboas before it was incinerated and the commercialization of his cell phone. Jaén explained that in similar cases, where the cause of death has been imprecise due to the body's condition or the manipulation of the scene, the Supreme Court of Justice has considered that peripheral elements, when linked together, point to a violent act. In his opinion, this is a case that must set a precedent.
